Degree VS Professional Exams - CSELITE perspective

Hi Friends,

As promised, we are back with the next mail on our thoughts as student Company Secretaries. When we passed our degree examinations each year with flying colors each time atleast standing one among the top five in the entire batch in our colleges, we kept wondering why the same magic did not work with CS. We always thought the course is extremely tough to clear and hence we were unable to make it with a 100% success rate.

We realized we needed someone to guide us to approach the exams the right way. Few of us joined classes for a few subjects which we thought would help us. Joining classes helped us follow an organized pattern of studying. We took up early morning classes which made us start our day earlier which would not have been the scenario had we studied on our own. Moreover, we gained inspiration and competitive spirit looking at many other budding professionals who attended the same coaching classes. Of course there were a determined lot who decided to time table their studies and followed the do it yourself techniques. There were successful people from both arenas. This is a subjective issue and it is for the student to decide on which course to follow depending upon his/her requirements and commitments.

One noticeable difference we found in our approach to Degree and Professional examinations was that for a Degree examination we studied all throughout the year with coaching all around, tests, mid term examinations and preparatory exams before we face the final examinations – All these definitely contributed to the success. Coaching classes gave us this advantage. We studies under compulsion of tests and examinations. We acknowledge that professional examinations are tougher, but if you can manage to score an 80% in a Bachelors Degree, scoring a 50% in CS should not be tough.

It is our advice to students to be persistent in their efforts and irrespective of whether you take coaching or not, ensure that you put in few hours of continuous effort and also test.

A friend on your road to success

With around 4 years of experience as Company Secretaries, we sat down last Saturday evening to recollect our days as students. We were pursuing a professional degree along with a Bachelor Degree which was not a very common affair half a decade ago. We might sound too old when we say half a decade but it is just a span of 5 years. We would proudly say we are students of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. And then people would ask us oh…secretary?? So…have u learnt typing and short hand? Then the air in us would go flat like the times jobs advertisement on television!!

The profession today is much better recognized in just a span of 5 years. Further, the course material supplied by the Institute is one of the best in the market with comprehensible language and in-depth information covering a wide area of knowledge areas.

There are many factors that continue to plague budding professionals. One issue that we can quickly think of is the methodology adopted by students in studying for their examinations. We wish to point out a few issues that we have come across being amidst CS students.

Today, almost all students rarely study from the study material. Most of them have developed an impression that this course can be cleared by studying 5 years guidelines and suggested answers. This (mis)impression is spreading amongst the students like forest fire.

A student MAY, perhaps, pass the examinations by following above approach but WILL NOT have an edge over other students in the job market due to lack of in-depth knowledge. We have personally seen candidates who could not perform well in real life situations despite claiming to have cleared the examinations in the first attempt!!

We would rather advice students not to get petrified or alarmed of not clearing the examinations despite being well prepared. Please remain calm and give yourself a second chance with an equal or a higher level of preparation with scanners as a tool to aid you in your preparations.

Please remember that the tougher path to success bears a sweeter fruit. There are innumerable stable, intelligent and reliable ways towards better preparation for examinations and take you through the path of success. Compulsory Computer Course - NIIT

6th All India Elocution Competition - 23/06/2007 1400 hours Bangalore Chapter

The 6th All India Elocution Competition - 2007 for students is being hosted by the Northern India Regional Council of the ICSI. The competition will be a three tier programme:

- Chapter Level 23/06/2007 1400 hours, Bangalore Chapter
- Regional Level 30/06/2007 at Chennai.
- National Level 07/07/2007 at NIRC-ICSI Building, 4, Prasad Nagar Institutional Area, New Delhi

The preliminary round of the competition will be conducted by Chapters/Satellite Chapters. The winner and runner up of the preliminary rounds held at Chapter/Satellite Chapter Level would qualify to participate in the Regional Level Competition conducted by respective Regions

The Winners in the Regional Level competition will be eligible to participate in the 6th All India Elocution Competition event to be held at New Delhi

A rolling shield would be presented to the winning team of the national level event at the National Convention. The winning team would be invited to attend the 35 th National Convention of the Institute scheduled to be held at Jaipur from 20th – 22nd September, 2007 without payment of Delegate Fee. The Institute's HQ will reimburse the sleeper class (2 nd Class) return rail fare from his/her native place to Jaipur and back. However, they shall have to make their own stay arrangements at Jaipur. A "Certificate of Participation" will be issued to all the participants of the National Level Event by NIRC.

The Topic for Preliminary Round at Chapters and Semi-Final Round at Regional Level is:

"INDEPENDENT DIRECTORS FROM DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL AREA ARE NECESSARY FOR GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE"

The Topic for Final Round of the All India Elocution Competition is:

"SEZ IS NECESSARY FOR FASTER DEVELOPMENT OF INDIAN ECONOMY"

RULES -

Eligibility:

Participation is restricted to the bonafide – registered students of the ICSI. Students who have passed all groups of the Final CS Examinations but undergoing training shall not be eligible to participate in the competition. Students will be required to carry their identity cards of ICSI with them at the competition.

Time Limit
Each participant will be given a time limit not exceeding 10 minutes to speak on the subject. A warning bell will be given after 8 minutes and a final bell after 10 minutes. If the participant exceeds the allocated time then the marks will be deducted at the discretion of the judges
